I'm an embedded systems developer at Genie Industries, who recently graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.S. in computer science. My interests lie with Linux, C, and Python, which I use frequently for the numerous projects I've taken on in my free time. I used to be more involved with web design and development, but I've found that my heart is more with systems.
In 2012 I was elected webmaster for CIF, a group of individuals who host seminars and provide tech support for the university community, amongst other things. I decided that CIF needed a new face for itself online and began redesigning the site over the summer after my freshman year.
I started by inventorying their content to understand what purposes the site serves, and then decided which content is unnecessary. Once that was done, I started work on a design that could be used for everything from the main site to their account management system and any future projects. Their public site was moved to WordPress, which I tweaked to be more friendly to future editors who may not be very tech-savvy. I then refactored all of the old Active Directory integration code to make it more efficient, more secure, and easier for future members to develop with.
I'm hoping that this laid the groundwork for future CIF members to add new features rather than fixing old problems.
Kejt is a multimedia blog for posting my creative works. It also serves as a playground for me to experiment with new web technologies.
Like most of my side projects, it serves as a safe place to experiment and try new things. While Kejt does make use of newer technology like html5 audio, it degrades gracefully in less capable browsers.
Mood & Figure is a collection of inspiration I’ve found over the years.
The site is an image blog that subtly uses colors taken from each entry, and always links back to the original artists if possible. There’s also tag-based search that allows for excluding certain tags and including multiple tags.
Mood & Figure also adapts to smaller screen sizes, and loads all images adaptively to prevent mobile visitors from downloading more data than necessary.
April Hammock is a recognized artist with national and local exhibits from New York to her home state of Louisiana. I was tasked with refreshing her existing site and making it easier for her to maintain.
The previous site was developed in Flash, so I ported the design to a WordPress theme and made tweaks to simplify the uploading process. A simple date picker allows the works to be automatically sorted into galleries specified by the artist.
About Life is a book that examines the philosophical questions that arose as the author escaped from Vietnam and adapted to life in the United States.
The home page is an interactive version of the book’s cover that allows visitors to read relevant excerpts. There’s also a blog where the author can continue to write, as well as links for purchasing a copy of the book.
The site itself runs on WordPress and was a fairly small project.
